5 Things To Know (retire TO something!)
The grass IS greener on the other side!
It’s that time of year, when I look back at the year gone by and start creating my vision for next year. This year, I’m looking at my 20/20 vision (Get it? I couldn’t resist!).
I always worry when I’m assessing my progress that there won’t be much to show for my time. And as always, I’m reminded of so much that’s happened.
I’m astounded by how much my life has changed, and how aligned it is now with the goals I began creating for myself in December of 2018!
In December 2018, my focus was on wintering in FL near my sons to see how I liked it. By early April, my goals shifted. They included taking my bucket-list trip to New Zealand, moving to Florida, various goals for my social life and vitality, and beginning to find ways to help people with the transition to retirement.
Looking back at 2019, it’s amazing what I’ve caused:
- I took my #1 bucket list trip to New Zealand (life goal victory!), a cruise in the Caribbean including to Havana Cuba (just before the US banned cruise stops there in June, whew!), and a scuba week with some buddies in Cozumel.
- I wintered in Florida from January to April and explored the area. Then I made the move there to be near my sons, bought the house I wanted at the location I wanted, and am finally getting resettled and reestablishing my social life.
- I began regularly publishing articles about retirement transition (with a noticeable interruption because of my move), published my second book (with the third one coming soon), created two courses for retirees in transition (Retire With Purpose™ and Retire With Power™), and started a podcast (which I’ll be resuming soon).
- Also personally rewarding to me is that I’ve already helped a number of retirees in transition through my programs.
Don’t get me wrong, I had plenty of fears, upsets, worries, and setbacks along the way. Most recently there was the disruption (more than I’d anticipated) with my relocation to Florida, but I’m getting settled and back on track again.
You may not be surprised to hear I have a system for staying on track!
Now I’m creating what’s next for myself. My 20/20 vision (again, I couldn’t resist) includes getting comfortably settled into my Florida home, building a wonderful social life, spending time with my 2 sons, more travel, and continuing to have fun helping people with the transition to retirement.
I’ve been purposefully creating my retirement and the grass seems pretty green over here. I’ve done it by keeping my eye on 5 things (more on that in a moment).
You can too!
It’s just a matter of having a clear retirement focus and putting it into action.
Today’s Tip
Retire TO something!
Has your experience been like mine? When I was working I was doing what had to do to fit in with what my employer (and later my clients) wanted. Along the way I was fortunately able to also grow and move in directions I found both interesting and personally rewarding. How about you?
Things change in retirement. It’s entirely your own agenda. You’re only beholding to yourself, your family, and perhaps some personal commitments of your choosing.
What freedom! In retirement, you can create whatever you want. Really!
So take charge of your life.
Ask yourself, “What do I want to make of my time in retirement?”
Get really clear about what you want and then start creating your “Retirement the way you’ve always imagined™.”
You know, it’s said the grass is greener on the other side. Consider that it’s greener where you water it!
And it’s also greener over the septic tank, hmmm.
With that in mind, consider this thought:
“When the purpose of your life is crystal clear in your mind, you will be able to continue your life journey very strongly even when everything else is very blurry!”
